Mahaa Shivaraathri.

Maha_Shivaratri

Maha Shivarathri is the day when Shiva was married
to the goddess Parvathi. It is also believed
that on Shivarathri, Lord Shiva became
Neelakantha or the blue throated by
swallowing the deadly poison, that came up
during the churning of Kshira Sagara or the
milky ocean. The poison was so deadly that
even a drop in his stomach(which represents
the universe)would have annihilated the
entire world.Goddess Parvathi held her hand
against his throat, preventing Him from
swallowing it and so Shiva has a blue throat,
where the poison is contained.Shivarathri is
therefore, also a day of thanks giving to Lord
Shiva for protecting us from annihilation.
It is also said that the snake’s 3 round,
around Lord Shiva’s neck depicts future, present
and past. That states that Shiva is independent of
time and controls time. The snake also stands for
passion and desires. By wearing the snake around
His neck, Lord Shiva conveys the message to all
His devotees that He has overcome all desires
and is in full control of Prakriti or Maya.

which is described as a coiled serpent lying
dormant in the Mulaadhaara chakra of all human

daughter.Andhaka was a blind and horrible looking

hands, due to touching of Shiva.

to give her freedom from loneliness.
When Shiva(static consciousness), united with Shakti
or Parvathi (Kinetic energy)Ganesha(sound) and Skanda
